Tielman Roos, owner and viticulturist at Mooiplaas Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve, matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. He studied at Stellenbosch University (SU) and started farming on Mooiplaas in 1979. In 1985 he married his wife Janine. They have three children. Their eldest son, Tielman joined the family business in 2016 after graduating from SU with a master’s degree in industrial engineering.
Mooiplaas has 90 ha under vineyards and a further 70 ha is dedicated to a private nature reserve that forms part of the bigger Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy. The conservancy again forms part of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO registered reserve. Eighty percent of the Mooiplaas wines are exported. They also provide grapes/bulk wine to various buyers and sell their wines in the local market. Mooiplaas is a family business where Tielman and his brother Louis carry forward the legacy of their father, Nicolaas Roos, who bought the farm in 1963.
Tielman is passionate about his family, nature, bird-watching, camping, rowing the Orange River once a year with his neighbour, Danie Steytler, tennis, and much more. Mooiplaas has a 6 km hiking route through the fynbos nature reserve and vineyards. A stable was converted to a rustic tasting room, dedicated to the family’s love of horse-riding. Mooiplaas offers accommodation in their 1833 Cape Dutch Manor House, which has earned national monument status.
