He obtained his Master’s degree in Town and Regional planning at the University of Stellenbosch in 1974. In February 1975 he started farming on Groenland and has been making wine ever since –for over 44 years. He married his wife Heléne in 1973 and they have 4 children: De Bruyn, Piet and Antoinette (twins) and Marié. Together they have blessed their parents with 12 grandchildren. Kosie’s son Piet joined the Groenland team in 2001 as assistant winemaker and viticulturist.
The farm Groenland has 154 ha under vineyards. Besides producing bottled wine, Groenland also sells bulk wine and provide grapes to various buyers. Although they export some wine abroad, their biggest market is locally. Of the 11 bottled wines, 2 are white wines and the rest are red wines. Groenland is a family business where the Steenkamp family and the employees work exceptionally well together in great harmony.
