Villiera Wines

Villiera Wines

Cousins Jeff and Simon Grier started the family-owned Villiera Wines outside Stellenbosch in 1983 and embarked on an extensive replanting of classic and local varietals.

Cathy Brewer (née Grier) later joined the family team to head up the sales, marketing and export divisions. The introduction of hi-tech cellar facilities for the production of still wines as well as Méthode Cap Classique combined with a unique wine business philosophy has seen Villiera developing into one of the largest private wineries in the country.

  • Villiera Wines Chanin Blanc

    AREA OF ORIGIN
    Stellenbosch

    PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s most planted variety. It is versatile in terms of style and food accompaniments. It covers various price points and it has become one of SA’s unique selling propositions. Our regular Chenin Blanc is well priced and is regarded as one of SA’s best value wines.

    HARVEST DETAILS
The majority of the grapes are picked mid-season by hand at optimum ripeness. A component was picked earlier to introduce freshness due to the warmer vintage. 2018 was a healthy vintage and there was virtually no botrytis. The fruit comes from 3 blocks including 40 % old bush vines.

    CELLAR TREATMENT
After crushing and destalking, about 4 hours of skin contact is allowed before gently pressing. The earlier picked portion was whole bunch pressed. After overnight settling the clear juice is cold fermented with aromatic yeasts. Thirty five percent of the wine was fermented in oak but removed immediately after fermentation. The blend remains “sur lie” for 2 months prior to stabilization and bottling.

    TASTING NOTES
The wine has abundant fruit with a hint of wood spice on the nose, including pineapple, guava and citrus. On the palate it is rich with a hint of freshness. It is well balanced with a long finish. The wine has the structure to last for 5 years, but Chenin Blanc can also be enjoyed young.

  • Villiera Wines Jasmine

    AREA OF ORIGIN
    Stellenbosch

    PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Created to satisfy market demand for a lighter, slightly sweet, floral blend. We had the ideal varieties and Jasmine was born. The evocative name reflects the essence of the wine.

    HARVEST DETAILS
Moscato, Riesling and Gewurztraminer were picked slightly earlier than usual to retain freshness and ensure a lighter style. Healthy fruit was handpicked and delivered in the morning while cool.

    CELLAR TREATMENT
The grapes were crushed and destalked before 6 hours of skin contact. Gentle pressing followed and the juice was settled overnight. Cold fermentation ensured the retention of fruit and after blending and stabilization the wine was bottled. TASTING NOTES: A floral, slightly spicy white wine which is fresh, light and slightly sweet but complex enough to drink with food (fusion and spicier dishes).

  • Villiera Wines Merlot

    AREA OF ORIGIN
    Stellenbosch

    PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Merlot was initially planted as a blending partner for Cabernet Sauvignon. The softer style was designed to round off the Cabernet Sauvignon. When the market indicated a liking for softer red wine, Merlot was included in our range as a stand-alone variety.

    HARVEST DETAILS
In 2016, good, healthy fruit was picked at optimum ripeness – determined by aroma assessment (i.e. maximum fruit intensity).

    CELLAR TREATMENT
The wine was fermented in rototanks between 20 ̊C and 25 ̊C with 30 % whole berries. Of the total 40 % was pre-soaked for 2 days.

  • Villiera Wines Starlight Brut

    AREA OF ORIGIN
    Stellenbosch

    PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Starlight Brut is a new innovation form Villiera. Renowned for their pioneering efforts, Villiera has created the first low alcohol Cap Classique without quality compromise. When Cap Classique was first enjoyed, drinkers likened the experience to tasting the stars.

    HARVEST DETAILS
Our lighter, sandy soils are ideal for producing more delicate, lighter wine which is why Villiera focuses on Cap Classique. Slightly unripe, healthy grapes are harvested from a mix of trellised and bush vine vineyards, beginning in mid January.

    CELLAR TREATMENT
Whole bunches are pressed very gently using a Champagne pressing program. Only the cuvee (best quality juice) is used in the blend. After blending, a small amount of alcohol is removed to ensure it meets the requirements for light wine. Yeast and sugar are added for a secondary fermentation in the bottle which takes 6 weeks, producing CO2. The sparkling wine is matured in contact with the lees for 24 months. Starlight Brut can age for at least 2 years from date of purchase. With age the wine softens in flavour, maintaining its sparkle, giving a fulfilling balance of age and fruit.

    TASTING NOTES
This light “Méthode Cap Classique” (bottle fermented sparkling wine) is a blend of red & white grapes displaying light, balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with a wine made in this style. The wine retains its fresh racy zestiness that is a result of crisp acidity and delicate fruit.

  • Villiera Wines Monro Brut

    AREA OF ORIGIN
    Stellenbosch

    PRODUCT BACKGROUND
A Prestige cuvee, produced whenever conditions favour the production of fine sparkling wine. The name is a family name which the Griers are proud to associate with their flagship. This Cap Classique is made with maturation potential in mind.

    HARVEST DETAILS
2012 was a relatively cool year. The vineyards were healthy and ripening occurred late. Healthy grapes were picked by hand and delivered to the cellar in whole bunch form.

    CELLAR TREATMENT
Whole bunches were carefully deposited into pneumatic bag presses and gently pressed using a champagne pressing cycle. Only the cuvee (best quality juice) was used in the blend. Part of the Chardonnay (half) was fermented in used oak barrels for extra complexity. After blending with Pinot Noir, yeast and sugar were added for a secondary fermentation in the bottle, followed by extended lees contact of 6 years.

    TASTING NOTES
Rich, creamy, yeasty nose, with a refreshing flavour on the middle palate developing finesse and complexity on the aftertaste. Powerful and rich to drink now, but it will still continue to improve for up to 3 years.
