Simonsig

Simonsig Wine Estate is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch wine region, and the Malan family name.

These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South Africaʼs first Méthode Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. He is also honoured for co-founding the thriving Stellenbosch Wine Route, a first in its time. Today, his legacy lives on through his sons, Francois and Johan, and grandchildren Francois-Jacques, Christelle and Michael, the 2nd and 3rd Malan generations at Simonsig Wine Estate.

  • Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2018

The 2018 vintage was really challenging, due to the prolonged drought which some believe to be the worst in 100 years, accompanied by water restrictions. The expertise of the vineyard team and cellar were definitely put to the test by the warm and dry climatic conditions. In the vineyard and in the cellar we adapted our practices to decrease the effect of water shortage. The dry weather throughout the season did have its advantages as vines were healthy, with little or no pests or diseases being recorded in most regions. Due to the dry, warm weather it resulted in smaller berries but with great intensity. The Gewurztraminer from our own vineyards and from Durbanville complemented each other beautifully.

  • Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2017

The 2017 vintage was a challenging one that led to a smaller, but very promising harvest for the Stellenbosch region. The dry warm weather produced grapes with small berries with great fruit intensity. The cooler nights and warmer days during the ripening period resulted in grapes with excellent colour and fruit formation. The components for this MCC 2017 did not disappoint and we were delighted with the quality and intense fruit spectrum from the various blocks.

  • Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé 2017

In 2004 Simonsig winemaker, Johan Malan, created an innovative taste sensation by blending three Pinot Noirs to launch the Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé. This delicious blend contains South Africa’s home grown varietal Pinotage in combination with Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier (not 2007 vintage), the two classic red varieties used in Champagne.

  • Simonsig Mr Borio Shiraz 2016

It was a challenging, early and very dry harvest. Water supplies had a great impact on the 2016 harvest, especially where vineyards were not buffered against the heat. However, the dry conditions led to very healthy grapes. Most other regions especially the Swartland
produced significant smaller crops, but at Simonsig Estate we produced 2% more than 2015. The Shiraz grapes delivered good concentration of colour and fruit.
